Ginger Turmeric Immuni-Tea

Everyday here on the farm I brew up a big pot of fresh grated turmeric, ginger, tropical mint, and add fresh lemon juice. We are fortunate to be able to grow these essential immune boosters here at Sueño de Vida. If you have wanted to take some control over your own food and herb supply, now is the time.

Here’s how I make a powerful immune system boosting tea. It’s also great cooled down to drink the next day. This recipe makes enough for a large soup pot of tea. For a smaller amount, adjust the ingredients by half.

Ingredients

A two inch piece of fresh ginger

A two inch piece of fresh turmeric

Generous handful of your favorite herbs. Mint is great, so is basil. Or star anise and cinnamon. Elderberry or hibiscus is lovely as well. Or just toss in two of your favorite herbal sachets.

juice of 2 or 3 lemons

Directions

You can grate or finely mince the ginger and turmeric, but I find it easier to break the pieces into small chunks and push them through a garlic press. I think the press also extracts more flavor (and beneficial compounds).

Bring the water to a full rolling boil. Add the grated or pressed ginger and turmeric and your herbs of choice. Put on the lid and turn off the heat. Wait ten minutes for the roots and herbs to steep. Remove the lid and wait for the tea to cool down for about five minutes, then add the fresh lemon juice. Cooking the lemon juice can make it bitter. Sweeten to your taste, or not.
